We left Tralee and headed to Galway, where we had booked a room at a large hotel and SaltHill, across the road from the promenade and looking out over Galway Bay.
After we checked in, we wandered into town and dined in a ‘Gastro Pub’ which was very nice. I still have a problem with the name ‘gastro ‘ as I just can’t seem to get excited by it. After dinner we wandered the lanes and found The Crane Bar - famous for live Irish Music, we debated whether we wanted to stay out and walk in the rain home later, or head into the pub, have a drink and listen to some music….the music won.
The bar slowly filled…and then the music started. We stayed for a an hour or so and then walked home.
The next day we went to town and wandered the streets, finding quaint shopping streets and lanes lined with shops, much of it very touristy. We found a great cafe in the dock area and enjoyed a great lunch..
The next day we travelled to Athlone - we had picked it as it was roughly half way to Dublin where we were catching a flight to London. Arriving earlier than we could check in, we spent the day touring the museum (which was very good) in the Castle and a boat tour up the River Shannon to the lake Lough Ree. We stayed in a restored country house, made of stone, surrounded by paddocks and on a narrow country lane.
