When in Rome…

We caught the fast train back to Rome, from Naples.   This time I paid more particular attention to the speed….I clocked it at 305 km/hour!!!  A smooth and seamless way to travel.

We found our lodgings on Via Cavour - around the corner from our last place in Rome which meant we were very familiar with the area.   Dinner was light and we found the wine bar we were in on our first night.   Such a lovely spot.

No sumptuous breakfast at our lodgings this time - not even a kettle!  We walked til we found a small cafe and had coffee and pastries, before  wandering the streets looking for a handbag for V4.   She found one….something that she will keep for as long as I have (I purchased one in my early 20’s which she now has as a ‘vintage’ piece).

We then went to the Vatican, with a tour of the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, St Peter’s Square and the Cathedral.   Words cannot do it justice….the priceless nature of the treasures the Catholic Church have collected over time, as well as the artworks - not to mention the real estate value is just astounding.  Unfortunately the Catacombs were closed so we missed those.

After a very long day walking, we treated ourselves to an aperitivo or two, a pizza dinner and sleep.

Our last day in Rome was spent wandering the gardens of the Villa Borghese.  We had intended to visit the Gallery - thinking we could buy tickets there….but they were sold out!  We wandered the paths, had lunch under the trees and marvelled at what it must have been to have such gardens and space when they were created - with the windy peasant streets below.

I left V4 at the Spagna (Spanish Stairs Metro Station) to collect my luggage and train it to the airport….Dublin next stop.   V4 catches the plain to Sydney via Dubai later tonight.

A wonderful experience in Italy comes to an end.   It has been full of wonderful sense stimulation - smell, touch, taste, vision and sound.  From beautiful perfumes to stinky drains; from exquisite pasta and sauce to so so pasta (we are now connoisseurs (in our heads).  We have touched exquisite fabrics, plants, rocks and stones and seen spectacular views.  The sounds of streets, people, birds, waves and tranquility amongst the madness.   A wonderful trip, with a fantastic travel companion!  Thankyou V4…love you!
